CAF wins an 811 million contract in the United States | companies
CAF has obtained a contract for an amount of 811 million in the United States. The project consists of the supply of 102 units for the railway network of the city of Boston. They are Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) models, which in Europe are used in their tram version, but in Boston they will also circulate in underground sections.
The award was approved on August 31 by the board of directors of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The order includes the option to order additional units and equipment. In addition to the maintenance for three years of the aforementioned fleet of 102 units.
The contract includes the supply of two driving simulators, fleet parts, special tools and test equipment. This is the second order that the Boston public transport agency signs with CAF. The Beasain group (Gipuzkoa) was chosen in 2014 to manufacture 24 LRVs that currently run on the oldest underground line in the United States. The current initiative seeks to replace units built between 1986 and 2007 of Japanese and Italian origin. CAF has highlighted that the new units seek to maximize passenger accessibility, as they are 100% low-floor and have priority areas for users with reduced mobility.
CAF’s operations in the United States are not limited to the city of Boston. The company is currently manufacturing new streetcars for the expansion of the Kansas City network. It also assembles subway cars for the city of Maryland. In addition to the plants in Spain (Beasain, Zaragoza, Irún and Castejón), CAF also produces its units in the United States, in the town of Elmira, as well as in Mexico, Brazil, France and the United Kingdom.
CAF has also reported other international contracts during the second quarter of 2022, including the Tel Aviv light rail (Israel) and the supply of rolling stock to Germany and the United Arab Emirates.
