First case of monkeypox in a woman in Aragon

The Department of Health of the Government of Aragon has detected in the last week seven new monkeypox casesone of them in a woman, that raise to 69 the number of people affected by this disease in the community.

According to the latest epidemiological bulletinin all cases except one the affected are men, aged between 21 and 64 years and, for the most part, with a close history of high-risk sexual practices.

On the other hand, the same bulletin referring to the last week reports a family outbreak of legionellosis in the province of Teruel, with two confirmed cases that required hospital admission. The Environmental Health Section has taken several water samples at home to be analyzed at the Teruel Public Health Laboratory, obtaining positive results for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 in most of the samples taken. This Section has established prevention and control measures against legionellosis at home.

Likewise, since the last Bulletin there have been reports in Aragon 249 new cases of covid-19 and three deaths. In this last week, an outbreak has been identified in residential centers in the Autonomous Community.

Caution among health authorities for monkeypox

Although the curve for monkeypox falls in general lines in Spain, the health authorities prefer to be cautious because August data is unreliable due to delayed notifications and a more than likely underdiagnosis and because its control cannot be entrusted to vaccination as was done with covid.

That is why the evolution of the outbreak that broke out in mid-May and that has placed Spain as the country with the highest incidence in the world (the second in number of cases) remains “uncertain”, recognized this Thursday the number two of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, María José Sierra, at the XL Annual Meeting of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE).

Until last August 30, Spain has recorded a total of 6,543 cases. Nine out of ten are MSM (Men who have sex with other men)a pattern that is repeated in all non-endemic countries where cases have exploded.

That the main route of transmission has been risky sexual intercourse does not mean that there are not others -Andalusia registered an outbreak of 21 affected in a piercing center and in Castellón a nursing baby was infected shortly after her father-, but yes is the predominant.
