The IAEA director declares that the safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is not guaranteed

The fears of the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding the safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant are fulfilled. After his first visit to the plant, controlled by the Russian army since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, affirms that the physical integrity of the facilities is not guaranteed.

“I was worried, I am worried and I will continue to worry about the plant until we achieve a more stable, more controllable situation. It is obvious that the plant and the physical integrity of the facilities have been violated several times, either casually or deliberately” Grossi says.

After the insistence of the press, Grossi has answered the question of how are the Ukrainian workers who are still in the plant.

“They are in a difficult situation, but even so, they maintain an incredible level of professionalism, I have seen them calm and they keep going.” Grossi concluded by saying that his work “has only just begun.”

The director of the UN agency explained that a group of inspectors will remain at the plant until Sunday or Monday to continue evaluating the situation. Furthermore, he also added that the IAEA intends to “establish a continuous presence” at the plant beyond that date.
